28 May, 0 km, Snow storm over night and woke to blowing snow and very cold. Very beautiful though, all the hills were covered in snow. The day cleared some, but was cold and blowing all day, so stayed another night.
30 May, 43 km, started into head wind and rolling ridges, made it back to the main highway, which we were warned off, but was excellent cycling.
3 June, 0 km, planned two nights in Kharakhorin, one of the danish royal family was also staying the the same camp.
Ulaan Baatar
Arrived in Ulaan Baatar after a 24 hour plane effort from Sydney. I am beginning to think it is something about me (Michaela) that means that each plane I take is delayed!!!
We are here now and doing well. Exploring the town, trying out our extremely poor Mongolian that is said nothing like we say it!! (Pete is counting…we are up to 5 words- not fluent)….
We shall try and get our wheels on some kind of road soon but will probably be in UB for a couple of days extending our visa.
~2000 km to the Mongolian Russia border.
Lots of love to all from sunny big sky Mongolia,
Michaela and Pete
One week to go, and one week delay
Its been a step forward and a step further away this week.
Due to timing being just too close we’ve delayed the departure for Ulaan Baatar until the 16th of May. We fly from Hobart now on the 10th and will spend some time in Sydney waiting for our Passports to be ready.
The bikes
Route Plan
2 weeks to go
Let the adventure begin….
We have changed the plan from Tibet, to Mongolia and Russia. In the heightened climate the Olympic games it became too tricky to vaguely wander through China and Tibet.
Mongolia seems to want us and Russia is happy to take our money. Surprising we still have enough legs to peddle.
So assuming the visas come though, the official departure date is the 11th of May 2008, arriving in Ulaanbaatar at the moonlit hour of 10:45 pm, to find our way to a Hotel with our bikes.
2008 Trip Markers Plan
Planned route, Changdu-Xining-Lhasa-Kathmandu-Dharamsala-Dehli ~ 5600 km,
this trip was abandoned because of political problems in Tibet, now we’re off to sunny Mongolia and Russia!
